🌐 Personal Development at Kilnhurst Primary School 🌐

🌟 Our Intent

At Kilnhurst Primary School, we are committed to developing the whole child. We strive to raise respectful and resilient learners who are curious about the world around them and aspire to be the very best version of themselves.

Through our motto, “Be your best self,” we promote high expectations for all. We believe that by modelling these expectations, we enable our pupils to grow into confident, thoughtful and responsible individuals who are well prepared for life beyond primary school.

At the heart of this is our commitment to pupils’ Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural (SMSC) development, which is woven through every aspect of school life.

📚 How We Develop Our Pupils

Through our Curriculum

Our curriculum is carefully designed to develop both academic success and personal growth.

We place a strong emphasis on:

  • Reading, ensuring pupils can access the wider curriculum and develop a love of literature
  • Mathematics, building both fluency and reasoning skills
  • Oracy, enabling pupils to confidently articulate their ideas and opinions
  • Developing an understanding of the world, so pupils can think critically and form informed views

Across all subjects, we promote:

  • Respect for diversity and difference
  • A strong sense of community and belonging
  • High aspirations for the future

🧩 Through PSHE and Personal Development

Personal Development is explicitly taught through our PSHE curriculum using the SCARF programme, alongside weekly Picture News sessions.

Through this, pupils learn about:

  • Relationships and wellbeing
  • British Values
  • Equality, diversity and protected characteristics
  • Their role as responsible citizens in modern Britain

🌍 Through Wider Opportunities

We provide a wide range of experiences that enrich pupils’ understanding of the world beyond their immediate environment:

  • Educational visits, including the beach (EYFS/KS1), the National Space Centre and the Think Tank in Birmingham
  • Visitors such as South Yorkshire Police, the Anne Frank Trust, exploitation awareness teams and Rotherham Football Club
  • Whole-school experiences such as Young Voices and in-school enrichment activities

Pupils also benefit from:

  • A wide range of clubs, including sports, music and academic support
  • A Year 6 residential visit to Peat Rigg, developing independence, teamwork and resilience

These opportunities ensure that all pupils, regardless of background, are able to access a rich and varied set of experiences.

🤝 Through Leadership and Community

We provide meaningful opportunities for pupils to develop leadership and responsibility:

  • School Council representatives
  • Trust-level pupil representatives
  • Participation in events such as Crucial Crew and local authority initiatives

We are proud of our strong links with the local community, including:

  • Partnerships with the church
  • Participation in local events such as Harvest Festival
  • Work with Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council

🇬🇧 Preparing Pupils for Life in Modern Britain

We actively promote fundamental British Values through our curriculum and wider opportunities, including weekly Picture News assemblies, pupil voice through School Council and opportunities to explore real-life issues and current events.

We ensure pupils develop a strong understanding of equality, diversity and inclusion. Through our curriculum, visitors and wider experiences, pupils learn about different cultures, beliefs and backgrounds beyond their immediate community, preparing them for life in modern Britain.
