Safeguarding at Kilnhurst Primary School

Kilnhurst Primary School - Official ...

At Kilnhurst Primary, safeguarding goes beyond policy — it is a culture founded on safety, belonging, and wellbeing. We believe children thrive when they feel secure, cared for, and valued. That’s why safeguarding is integrated into all aspects of school life, from our curriculum and staff training to classroom routines and daily activities. We work closely with the community to ensure that all stakeholders feel safe and able to share any concerns. If you have any concerns or need support, we are always here to listen.

Meet the Safeguarding Team
At Kilnhurst PrimarySchool, safeguarding is overseen by a dedicated and well-trained team of staff responsible for ensuring the wellbeing of every child.

Our Safeguarding Team includes:

Designated Safeguarding Lead: Mrs. C Wright (Teacher)

Deputy Safeguarding Lead: Mr A. Booth (Headteacher)

Deputy Safeguarding Lead: Mrs. E Swift (Deputy Head)

All of our DSLs have completed advanced safeguarding training and bring extensive experience working with families, children, and external agencies. They are the first point of contact if you have concerns about your child or any other child in our school.

You can contact the team confidentially by calling the school office or asking to speak to them directly on 01709 570590

What Safeguarding Means – and Why It Matters

Safeguarding involves the steps we take to ensure the welfare of children and protect them from harm. This includes:

  • Preventing abuse and neglect

  • Supporting children’s health and wellbeing

  • Providing safe and effective care for all children

  • Encouraging children to speak up and make safe choices

We follow statutory guidance, including Keeping Children Safe in Education (DfE), and adhere to local safeguarding procedures set by the Rotherham Safeguarding Children Partnership (RSCP).

When concerns arise, we collaborate closely with professionals such as health visitors, social workers, school nurses, and the police to make sure children and families receive the right support at the right time.

Safeguarding within our Curriculumn

We take a proactive approach by integrating safeguarding into our daily teaching. This supports children in developing the knowledge and confidence they need to stay safe both in the real world and online.

We teach children:

  • How to build safe and respectful relationships
  • How to identify unsafe situations and behaviours
  • When and how to seek help
  • How to safeguard their personal information and stay safe online

Our curriculum covers:

  • PSHE and RSE lessons focusing on wellbeing, friendships, personal boundaries, and emotions
  • Online safety within computing lessons, using resources such as Project Evolve and Internet Legends
  • Workshops and visits from organisations including the NSPCC, PCSOs, mental health team, Crucial crew, Harms of Hate and exploitation workshops.

Safeguarding is further reinforced through assemblies, displays, themed weeks (for example, Wellbeing Week), and class or community circle time.

Safeguarding culture for all

Here at Kilnhurst, we strive to maintain a culture of vigilance, recognising that safeguarding is the responsibility of every member of staff, not just senior leaders.

To support this, we:

  • Provide annual and ongoing training for all staff on the latest safeguarding guidance

  • Use CPOMS and Arbor, a secure system to record and monitor concerns

  • Hold weekly briefings and updates to stay aware of risks and emerging issues

  • Attend trust-wide DSL networks to share best practice

  • Follow an annual safeguarding calendar to plan audits, reviews, and priorities

Staff training covers not only child protection but also:

  • Prevent (awareness of radicalisation)

  • FGM (Female Genital Mutilation)

  • County Lines, exploitation, and online grooming

Additionally, we meet regularly as a team to review support for vulnerable children, ensuring that no child is overlooked.

Any concerns....

If you ever worry that a child is being harmed or may be at risk, it is important to speak up. You don’t need evidence — a concern alone is sufficient.

You can take the following steps:

  • Speak to one of our Designated Safeguarding Leads
  • Contact Rotherham MASH (Multi-Agency Safeguarding Hub) on 01709 336080
  • In an emergency, call 999

Safeguarding is everyone’s responsibility — parents, staff, and the wider community all have a role to play.

 Prevent Duty

Under the Prevent Duty, schools are required to help protect children from the risks of radicalisation and exposure to extremist ideas. At Kilnhurst, we address this thoughtfully through teaching, discussion, and awareness-raising.

We help children learn:

  • How to identify extremism and hate

  • To think critically about what they see online or hear from others

  • That all people deserve respect, no matter their beliefs or background

This approach is focused on safety and inclusion, not political viewpoints and is strengthened through school within our teaching of British Values

Supporting families and Early Help

Sometimes families need a little extra support — and that’s okay. At Kilnhurst, we work with Rotherham Family Hubs and other services to offer a range of parenting support options.

Some of these options come through Early Help

These programmes are available in person and online. You can register yourself, or we can help signpost you.

What Is Early Help?

Early Help means offering the right support at the right time — before problems grow.

This might include:

  • Advice on parenting, behaviour or school
  • Help with routines, emotional needs, or finances
  • Linking your family with community support groups

It’s voluntary, friendly, and non-judgemental. Feel free to come and have a chat with any member of staff

Online Safety

From an early age, we guide our children to use the internet safely, responsibly, and kindly. Our online safety programme covers:

  • Protecting personal information
  • Knowing what to do if something online worries or upsets them
  • Being respectful and responsible digital citizens
  • Recognising online risks such as scams, misinformation, or strangers

At Kilnhurst, we reinforce these messages through Safer Internet Day activities, regular assemblies, and guidance shared in newsletters. We also draw on trusted resources such as:
